Family:
Ericaceae (Heath)
Distribution:
Colorado
Hardiness:
USDA Zone 4b (-25 to -20 °F)
Life form:
Shrub/sub-shrub

Cultivated
Growing Conditions:
Panchito manzanita grows best on slopes with good drainage; amend heavy soils with shale or granite. It grows in full sun but appreciates afternoon shade. It is very drought tolerant and requires little supplemental watering when established, but needs moderate watering for the first 2 years. Overwatering will cause root rot. It grows slowly, spreading 3-4 feet in 5-7 years.
Description:
Panchito manzanita is a medium-sized, naturally occurring hybrid that grows 10-24 inches tall and 36-60 inches wide in 3-7 years. It has undulating mahogany-red branches and dark green, elliptic or broad lance-shaped evergreen leaves that may turn red or purple in fall. Tiny, waxy, pinkish-white urn-shaped flowers are produced in early spring. Mature plants produce dark red berries in summer.
