Common name: 'Dark Knight' blue mist spirea, 'Dark Knight' bluebeard
Family: Lamiaceae (Mint)
Distribution: Cultivated
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5 (-20 to -10 °F)
Life form: Deciduous shrub/sub-shrub
Occurrence in New Mexico: Cultivar
Growing Conditions: Caryopteris can be used in mixed or shrub borders or in containers, and is also grown for the cut flower market. It is tolerant of most soils, as long as it is well drained. It is not pH sensitive, and will grow in alkaline, chalky soil. Blooming is best in full sun in moderately fertile, moist soil; however, the plant is more drought tolerant in light shade. Only occasional watering is needed for established plants and overwatering will cause root rot. Too much fertilizer can result in vigorous growth but fewer blooms. Top growth can be damaged by cold winters, so pruning in spring will encourage production of healthy new growth from lower stems. The shrub should be cut back to one-third or one-half its height each spring after the threat of frost has passed. The cultivar seeds freely.
