Common name:
grape hyacinth
Family:
Asparagaceae (Asparagus)
Distribution:
Southeastern Europe, Western Asia
Habitat:
Montane grasslands and open forests, foothills
Hardiness:
USDA Zone 4 (-30 to -20 °F)
Life form:
Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber)
Occurrence in New Mexico:
Exotic
Growing Conditions:
Native to southeastern Europe (Bulgaria, former Yugoslavia, Greece) and Western Asia (Iran, Turkey), and prominent in the meadows and woodlands of the Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia). These spring flowers grow in full sun to part shade. They do best in well-drained soil, but will tolerate clay. They should be watered regularly during leaf and flower production, but require less water when plants are dormant in summer. Bulbs should be planted 3” deep and 3” apart in fall. Plants will naturalize by bulb offsets and self-seeding. Large clumps may be divided in autumn or when the leaves die back. These bulbs are best when massed around shrubs or planted in loose drifts in rock gardens or under deciduous trees. They perform well as container plants and are easily forced for winter blooms.
