Common name: Mojave sage, giant purple desert sage, blue sage, rose sage, salvia rosa
Family: Lamiaceae (Mint)
Distribution: Arizona, California, Nevada
Habitat: Pinyon/juniper and pine woodlands, montane slopes
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5 (-20 to -10 °F)
Life form: Shrub/sub-shrub
Occurrence in New Mexico: Exotic
Growing Conditions: Mojave sage is native to the desert mountains of Arizona, Nevada, California, and northern Baja California. It grows on dry slopes, in piñon-juniper or pine woodlands, often in decomposed granite, at elevations from 5,000-10,000 ft. It should be planted in nutrient-poor, well-drained soil. It grows best in dry shade or partial shade of trees. It needs only minimal water after it is established. Soil that is too rich or too much water promotes lush growth, but short-lived plants. Cut back the plant when it is dormant.
Description: Mojave sage is a shrubby plant that grows 1 ½ -2 feet tall and about 2 feet wide. It has aromatic, semi-evergreen, silvery, oppositely paired leaves along square stems. In summer, it produces 10-inch flower spikes of densely packed whorls of delicate violet-blue flowers surrounded by wine-red bracts.
