Growing Conditions: Curl-leaf mountain mahogany is native to high altitude steppe from 5,000-9,500 feet, growing on dry, rocky slopes in piñon-juniper and ponderosa pine woodlands or in pure stands. It is common on the lower mountain slopes throughout Great Basin area. The Four Corners region is the eastern part of the range. This drought tolerant plant is very long-lived; some plants in Nevada's Shoshone Range are estimated to be over 1300 years old. It grows in dry, well-drained, nutrient-poor soils, including limestone soils. The tree has root nodules that fix nitrogen and is good for revegetation and erosion control, including mine reclamation, and often resprouts after fire. In the garden, it is a good dwarf evergreen tree for either sun or part shade. It can be propagated from seeds or cuttings of summer wood; however, growth from seeds is slow. Moist, cold stratification will enhance germination. Deplumed seeds should be soaked in water for thirty minutes before sowing. Seeds collected from the dried fruits remain viable several years.
