Common name: Engelmann daisy
Family: Asteraceae (Aster)
Distribution: Central and Southwestern United States, Northern Mexico
Habitat: Grassland, scrublands, sandy areas, woodlands
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5 (-20 to -10 °F)
Life form: Evergreen perennial
Occurrence in New Mexico: New Mexico native plant
Growing Conditions: Engelmann’s daisy grows in the Great Plains of North America, extending from South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado, south through Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona to northeastern Mexico. It is widespread in New Mexico. It grows in grasslands, piñon-juniper woodlands, desert scrub, and along roadsides, at elevations from 300-6,000 feet. It grows in dry, sunny sites in sand or calcareous loams or clays. It prefers a medium amount of water, but will bloom in drought conditions. Supplemental watering may be needed in unusually dry winters and springs, and watering often extends the flowering period. It is generally grown from seed, planted in autumn. Seeds should be lightly raked into loose topsoil. It has a long taproot, and if transplanting is necessary, should be transplanted in winter during its rosette stage. Cutting the plants back in late summer promotes re-blooming. Engelmann’s daisies are wonderful in wildflower meadows or in garden borders, and are sometimes planted along roadsides.
